Document Checks


The document checks below follow the order shown in Adobe Acrobat Pro (DC) when Adobe's Accessibility Checker scans the document.

Refresh the Accessibility Checker after completing a set of steps.
  • Accessibility Permission Flag
    1. Select the Menu button (top, right-hand corner) to expand the menu.
    2. Select Document Properties near the bottom of the menu options. The Document Properties dialog box will open.
    3. In the Security tab, in the Document Security section, ensure that the Security Method is set to No Security.
    4. Select OK.
  • Image-Only PDF
    1. Select and expand the All Tools button on the top-header toolbar. The All Tools side panel will open.
    2. Select the Scan & OCR tool from the All Tools side panel.
    3. In the Recognize Text section, select and expand the In this file button.
    4. Select an option for Pages and then select an option for Language.
    5. Finally, select Recognize text.
  • Tagged PDF

    This test fails when the PDF contains no tagging structure, or reading order. To fix this you must either:

    • Autotag the document and fix tags appropriately.
    • Enable tagging when exporting from the source document (Recommended).
    • Manually create a tagging structure.

    To autotag to the document:

    1. Select and expand All Tools from the top-header toolbar. The All Tools side panel will open.
    2. Select the Prepare for accessibility tool from the All Tools side panel.
    3. Select the Automatically tag PDF button.
    4. It may bring up a dialog box to confirm your choice. Select Confirm.
  • Logical Reading Order

    This test must be passed manually after manually checking the reading order of the document.

    To manually check the reading order:

    1. Select and expand the Accessibility Tags side panel from the right-rail toolbar.
    2. The reading order of the document is read directly from the tags panel to screen reader users (top-to-bottom). Ensure that the tags from the tags panel are in a logical reading order. You can click and drag elements within the tags tree to adjust the reading order.

    To manually pass the document:

    1. Select and expand the Accessibility Checker side panel from the right-rail toolbar.
    2. Expand the Document accordion.
    3. Select the Logical Reading Order test and open the context menu (right-click or shift + F10).
    4. Select Pass from the context menu.
  • Primary Language
    1. Select the Menu button (top, right-hand corner) to expand the menu.
    2. Select the Document Properties... option. The Document Properties dialog box will open.
    3. Select the Advanced tab.
    4. In the Reading Options section, select an option for Language.
    5. Select OK.
  • Title
    1. Select the Menu button (top, right-hand corner) to expand the menu.
    2. Select the Document Properties... option. The Document Properties dialog box will open.
    3. Select the Description tab.
    4. In the Description section, type the title of the document into the Title field. Recommended: the Title field and the heading 1 of the document should match.
    5. Select the Initial View tab.
    6. In the Window Options section, set Show to Document Title.
    7. Select OK.
  • Bookmarks
    1. Select and expand the Bookmarks side panel from the right-rail toolbar.
    2. Select and expand the Options menu (ellipses).
    3. Select the New Bookmarks from Structure... option. The Structure Elements dialog box will open.
    4. Select all heading levels from the Structure list (H1, H2, H3, et cetera).
    5. Select OK.
    6. Organize the bookmarks so they follow a heading hierarchy structure (nest the bookmarks).
  • Color Contrast

    This test must be passed manually after manually checking the color contrast of the document.

    To manually check the color contrast.

    1. Go to WebAIM's Color Contrast Checker.
    2. Use the Foreground color picker (eyedropper) to select the text color.
    3. Use the Background color picker to select the text background.
    4. Ensure that the color contrast is sufficient for normal text, large text, and graphical objects. All content must pass WCAG AA.

    To manually pass the color contrast test:

    1. Select and expand the Accessibility Checker side panel from the right-rail toolbar.
    2. Expand the Document accordion.
    3. Select the Color Contrast test and open the context menu (right-click or shift + F10).
    4. Select Pass from the context menu.
