Alternate Text Checks


Refresh the Accessibility Checker after completing a set of steps.
  • Figures Alternate Text
    1. In the Accessibility Checker side panel, expand the Alternate Text accordion.
    2. Right-click the Figures Alternate Text - Failed test to open the context menu, or with the the Figures Alternate Text - Failed test selected, use Shift + F10 on your keyboard.
    3. Select Fix from the context menu. The Set Alternate Text dialog box will open.
    4. An image will appear highlighted on the document. If the highlighted image is decorative, then check the Decorative Figure checkbox. If the image contains essential information, insert descriptive alternative text in the Alternate Text field.
    5. Use the right arrow button to go to the next figure and repeat step 4.
    6. Select Save & Close.
  • Nested Alternate Text

    Nested alternate text is not read by screen readers.

    1. In the Accessibility Checker side panel, expand the Alternate Text accordion.
    2. Right-click the Nested Alternate Text - Failed test to open the context menu, or with the the Nested Alternate Text - Failed test selected, use Shift + F10 on your keyboard.
    3. Select Show in Tags panel from the context menu. The nested tag with alternative text will appear highlighted in the tags tree.
    4. Right-click or Shift + F10 the highlighted tag to open the context menu.
    5. Select Properties... from the context menu. The Object Properties dialog box will open.
    6. In the Tag tab, delete the text in the Alternate Text for Images field.
    7. Select Close.
  • Associated with Content

    This test fails when an empty tag contains alternate text.

    1. In the Accessibility Tags side panel, locate the empty tag. The empty tag is missing the right facing chevron icon because it is unable to expand.
    2. Right-click or Shift + F10 with the empty tag selected to open the context menu.
    3. Select Properties... (continue to step 4) or select Delete Tag.
    4. In the Tag tab, delete the contents in the Alternate Text for Images field.
  • Hides Annotation

    If an annotation is nested in a tag that contains alternate text, then the annotation will not be read.

    1. In the Accessibility Tags side panel, locate the parent tag that contains alternate text.
    2. Right-click or Shift + F10 with the parent tag selected to open the context menu.
    3. Select Properties...
    4. In the Tag tab, delete the contents in the Alternate Text for Images field.
