Exposure Control

NOTICE on BLOODBORNE PATHOGEN

Dental Health Care Workers are exposed to bloodborne pathogens when treating patients.  Patients may also be exposed to pathogens during dental hygiene procedures.  The TCDH program follows OSHA/CDC requirements for cleaning, disinfecting, and sterilizing equipment and work spaces including wearing personal protective equipment during treatment procedures.

ENGINEERING AND WORK PRACTICE CONTROLS

Engineering and work practice controls used to prevent or minimize exposure to bloodborne pathogens:

  • Heat (steam under pressure) sterilizers
  • Chemical disinfectants
  • Instrument washers
  • Sharps disposal containers
  • Ultrasonic cleaners
  • High-volume evacuation systems
  • Needle recapping devices

NOTICE:  Aerosol Transmissible Disease (ATDs) Engineering Controls

The Taft College Dental Hygiene Program has implemented enhanced infection control measures in alignment with guidelines from the CDC, OSHA, ADA, and the California Department of Public Health. These measures include, but are not limited to:

  • Required use of masks/face coverings
  • Use of face shields during aerosol-producing procedures
  • Reduction of aerosol production through High-Volume Evacuation (HVE) systems
