  • Validity of Document Title

This is only checked if a Document Title is present. If the Document Title contains .pdf, .ai, et cetera, it will show as warned because the Document Title should not be the same as the file name. Similarly, if the Document Title contains a file path such as "C:\Users\Downloads," it will show as warned because the Document Title should not be the same as the file path.

In order to pass this check, the Document Title should not contain the file type or file path. To view and/or change your Document Title:

    1. Select the Menu button (top, right-hand corner) to expand the menu.
    2. Select the Document Properties... option. The Document Properties dialog box will open.
    3. Select the Description tab.
    4. In the Description section, ensure that the Title textbox does not contain elements of a file type or a file path.

For more information, please see Validity of Document Title.

  • Tagged Text Consists of Only Whitespace

This is typically marked as an error when a whitespace character such as a space, is tagged independently as a paragraph, heading, or other tag element.

Whitespaces are still read by screen readers and can be rather disruptive to users with assistive technology. It is best to mark any unnecessary whitespaces as artifacts so that they are ignored by assistive technology.

  • Presence of Headings

Headings should be present on every document because they inform the user of the main idea and topics of the document.

In order for this not to be marked as an error, there must be elements on the tags panel marked as heading level (H1, H2, H3, et cetera).

  • Presence of Bookmarks (Document Outline)

Bookmarks allow users to easily jump to sections of the document. It is best to use the headings of the document as bookmarks so users can find the information in the section(s) they need.

    1. Select and expand the Bookmarks side panel from the right-rail toolbar.
    2. Select and expand the Options menu (ellipses).
    3. Select the New Bookmarks from Structure... option. The Structure Elements dialog box will open.
    4. Select all heading levels from the Structure list (H1, H2, H3, et cetera).
    5. Select OK.
    6. Organize the bookmarks so they follow a heading hierarchy structure (nest the bookmarks).
