The Associate in Arts degree in Liberal Arts with an Area of Emphasis: Arts and Humanities is intended for students not planning to transfer to a four-year university. This degree is designed to prepare students for life in the global community by developing a core of knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for personal and professional success.

The courses in the Area of Emphasis: Arts and Humanities emphasize the study of cultural activities and artistic expressions of human beings. Students will develop an awareness of the ways in which people throughout the ages and in different cultures have responded to themselves and the world around them in artistic and cultural creation. Students will develop aesthetic understanding and an ability to make value judgments.

Select from a wide range of courses in several disciplines, including two-dimensional and three-dimensional design courses; drawing and composition; figure drawing; painting; digital art; graphic design; computer imaging: Adobe Photoshop; printmaking; art appreciation; art history; survey of African, Oceanic, and Indigenous North American art; survey of Asian art; theatre; elementary acting; critical thinking, literature, and composition; several options in creative writing; American literature; world literature; British literature; Western civilization; the humanities; film studies; music appreciation; philosophy; living religions; photography; and Spanish language.

Earnings Potential

The California Community Colleges (CCC) provides the following five-year data on an associate degree in liberal arts. Different programs and areas of emphasis will have variations of this range. An associate degree in liberal arts offers the salary potential of $29,882 two years after graduation, with expected increases to $42,063 at five years. These do not reflect salaries with a four-year degree.1

Program Requirements

To earn an Associate in Arts in Liberal Arts with an Area of Emphasis: Arts and Humanities, students must complete: (1) all course requirements with a minimum grade of “C” in each course; and (2) complete General Education Graduation Requirements with an overall GPA of 2.0 or better.

Select any 18 units (credits) from the extensive Program course list at the Degree Requirements link. Selections must be from three different disciplines. Most of the courses are three units; however, a few are higher. 

Program Learning Outcomes

After completing the Liberal Arts Area of Emphasis: Arts and Humanities major, a student will be able to:

  1. Cross-correlate cultural, historical, or biographical motifs, ideas, objects, or issues for similarity or distinction.
  2. Analyze subject-specific ideas, objects issues, or motifs.
