What is the Transition to Independent Living Program and how did it begin?
The Transition to Independent Living (TIL) Program at Taft College is a 22-month, inclusive post-secondary educational experience designed for students with developmental or intellectual disabilities. The TIL Program offers onsite dormitories and creates a supportive environment where students develop essential skills in career readiness, building social connections, and managing daily living tasks. With a focus on each student’s strengths, goals, and independence, TIL empowers individuals to live fulfilling and productive lives. Established in 1995 through a partnership with the Kern Regional Center, the TIL Program has since bcome a model for similar initiatives across the country.
How has the Transition to Independent Living Program been successful for 30+ years?
The TIL Program, a whole-person centered approach, provides instruction, training, and support on a community college campus. The comprehensive Program includes curricula and training that promote acquisition of the functional, social, and career skills necessary for students to live productive lives.
What happens when a candidate is admitted to the Transition to Independent Living Program?
Upon TIL Program admission, our students from the TIL Program move into onsite dormitories or off-campus housing and begin instruction. Students from the TIL Program participate in the Program for 22 months, from August through June each academic year.
What are the Admission Criteria for the Transition to Independent Living Program?
To qualify for the TIL Program, candidates must:
- Be at least 18 years old and motivated to learn independence.
- Meet Regional Center eligibility criteria (details at taftcollege.edu/til).
- Have sufficient income to cover living costs.
- Consent to inform parents of issues impacting independent living.
- Possess self-help skills to safely function in campus housing without direct supervision during non-program hours.
- Participate in the Taft College Career Education Program and adhere to TIL rules.
- Complete a campus tour, view entrance criteria, submit an application, and complete an interview.
Final acceptance is contingent on completing required intake paperwork.
