Introduction to the Program
Taft College’s Political Science for Transfer Associate in Arts Degree provides a strong foundation in government, public policy, political theory, international relations, civic engagement, and political systems.
Students explore how decisions made at the local, state, national, and global levels affect communities and everyday life. Through the study of government, political ideas, law, public policy, and social issues, students build skills in reading, writing, research, communication, and critical thinking.
This degree is designed for students who plan to transfer to a California State University or another four-year institution to continue their studies in political science or a related field.
What Is Political Science?
Political science is the study of government, political systems, public policy, laws, and the ways people and institutions make decisions that affect communities, states, and countries.
Students examine questions such as:
How are laws created and enforced?
How do elections and political participation influence government?
How do public policies affect education, health care, housing, the economy, and public safety?
How do local, state, and federal governments work together?
How do countries address global issues such as conflict, trade, human rights, and environmental policy?
Political science also explores how people, organizations, political parties, advocacy groups, and government agencies influence public decisions. Students learn to analyze information, consider multiple perspectives, and better understand the challenges facing society.
