You may think you aren’t college material but the fact is that everyone can learn in college. There are many people that are willing to give a helping hand if you look for their help. I have been going to college for 3 years now and I find help everywhere I turn.
I am a student who was diagnosed at an early age with learning difficulties in reading. I am certainly struggling with reading problems today, but I have found through going to college that my reading has improved dramatically. Now I’m a student who can do things for himself and I am able to help others with their problems in school.
If you want to become college material, you must go out and seek information. You must think college at all moments of your life. Never quit thinking about it. You must always spend your free time studying if you really want to succeed in a college. You must learn the information and make yourself remember it. You must remember what you learn so if it means staying up all hours of the night to learn something then you must do this. It is important to get sleep, but there will be times that you just don’t have time to sleep. You must make yourself learn the information at all costs. My recommendation to you is to sleep at different hours during the day. Just take some power naps and you will make up for your lost sleep.

I have been here at Taft College for three semesters. I have overcome a lot.
I have experienced a few different obstacles. The first semester I was here I tried to keep my learning disabilities to myself. I didn’t really feel comfortable telling my instructors and so I didn’t. I did okay that semester, but I knew I could do better. So the next time I told a few of my instructors, but I still didn’t tell them all. I only told the ones I felt comfortable with, I did a lot better.
In my third semester I decided to tell all of my instructors about my learning disabilities. It was very hard for me to do. I thought it would all be better, but I learned that it has only just begun.
I have found that some instructors are afraid to change their routine; however I have found that most of them are more then happy to help in any way they can.
Now I’m doing a lot better, but it is still a hard task telling my instructors; however I’m hoping it will get easier with time.

Student Support Services is designed to help students overcome whatever obstacles may stand in their way of achieving success. Each student has their own needs. My name is Brandalyn and in my case I have some physical challenges that would have prevented me from getting to work on time if I wanted to attend class. Student Support Services was there to help. They gave me rides to work every day and I am grateful for that.
I am also an auditory learner, so to take in everything the instructor is saying while trying to keep up on notes is distracting. To accommodate for this I was given carbon paper to have notes taken for me. Student Support Services can issue you an accommodation card to help you in whatever way you may need in class, so if you think they can help, take advantage of it and go talk to someone.
Everyone has their challenges in one way or another, but if they are getting in the way of your learning experiences give this support system a chance; I did, and now I am on track to graduate with honors!

I came to Student Support Services because I have a learning disability. They have a lot of resources to help me get my education. The resources that I have used that I found especially helpful are: being able to use the calculator as well as my notes when taking a math test, using a tape recorder to tape lectures, using NCR notes-NCR notes are pieces of paper that come along with a yellow pieces of paper that the notes are originally used on so if a fellow student missed a day of class and they don’t have notes, you can give him/her the yellow portion of it. I am able to take my tests, quizzes, or exams in the Learning Resource Center. My provision card also allows me to have more time on tests. Student Support Services is very useful and reliable.
