a = 1 b = 1 c = 1 d = 1 e = 1 f = 1 g = 1 h = 1 i = 1 j = 0Library resources and services in higher education must meet the needs of faculty, students, and academic support staff, wherever these individuals are located. Online students may never have the opportunity to visit the campus from which they are taking courses or receiving their degree and should have access to the same services provided to onsite students. Some surveys show that online students increasingly rely on access to the library catalog, journal indexes, and other available resources when they are taking online courses at a distance. Question 2: We rate online research resources that our college provides to online students as:a. excellent b. good c. fair d. poor |
0 |
a = 3 b = 2 c = 1 d = 0Library and reference services play an extremely important role of an online virtual campus. Without them, distant students are at a distinct disadvantage over their on-campus counterparts because of the difficulty in accessing materials needed for their class or projects. On-campus students can derive much benefit from online resources as well, because they can work during the times your library is closed or find research materials that may not be available on your campus. If you answered "excellent" or "good," meaning that you provide online 5-9 of the resources listed in Question 1, then your campus is on the way to completing one facet of a virtual campus. If you answered "fair" or "poor," meaning that you provide online less than 5 of the resources listed in Question 1, and if you are seriously committed to building an online program, then you should begin to plan to implement additional resources. Planning should involve input from the library and learning resources staff, faculty members, and administrators as to what resources are needed for your campus courses. Question 3: Please indicate the modes in which reference services are provided to online students:a. face to face b. email c. instant messaging programs d. video e. telephone f. teleconferencing g. none |
2 |
a = 1 b = 1 c = 1 d = 1 e = 1 f = 1 g = 0By its very nature, online education occurs via methods other than face-to-face interaction. Through the discussion board, chat, e-mail, instant messaging programs, and telephone and video conferencing, however, online reference services can provide ample opportunities for students to interact with the campus librarians. Following are some resources that could help provide interactivity in your online library reference services. Question 4: Have you developed a means for online students to utilize document delivery or interlibrary loan? |
0 |
Yes = 1 No = 0Document delivery and interlibrary loan expands access to materials for online students beyond the college's own resources. If you already have a document delivery or interlibrary loan program available to students on your campus, then you should plan to implement a similar program for your online students if you haven't already. Include in your planning ways for students to access the service and funding needs. Resources: Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) Guidelines for Distance Learning Library Services. Question 5: Do you have a library staff member, trained in web development, responsible for maintaining the library web resources? |
1 |
Yes = 1 No = 0Library web resources change and grow constantly and should be updated regularly in order to best serve the online student. Having a trained library staff member who can update the material quickly and continually would help maintain the currency and quality level of your resources. Question 6: Check all library staff available to provide assistance to online students.a. Librarian b. Para-professional c. None |
2 |
a = 1 b = 1 c = 0Even if you have a website that is full of library resources, students still need a contact person in case they need help. For instance, they may have reference questions, be confused on how to do searches, or have basic library usage questions. If your library has designated a librarian or para-professional to assist online students, the contact information should be readily available. Question 7: Does your college library have funds allocated to specifically support putting library resources online? |
1 |
Yes = 1 No = 0Special funds for putting library resources online are necessary to enable delivery of equivalent library services and to maintain quality in a distance learning program. If a comprehensive virtual campus is your goal and you answered "no," then create a library technology plan in which the funding needs are specified and resources identified.
