SELECTION - Criteria for admissionTAFT COLLEGE DENTAL HYGIENE PROGRAM
PREREQUISITES AND SELECTION CRITERIA FOR FALL 2009 PROGRAM APPLICANTS
Taft College accepts twenty-four qualified students into its Dental Hygiene Program each Fall semester. There are minimum admission requirements that all applicants must meet in order to be considered for acceptance into the program.
The application period for the Fall 2009 class is January 1 through March 31, 2009. Prerequisites to the program must be completed by December 31, 2008 in order to apply to the Fall 2009 class.
1. Applicants must earn a minimum grade of "C" in each of the following prerequisite courses:
Please Note: As of 2010 applicants must earn a minimum GPA of 2.75 in the prerequisite courses.
Human Anatomy - 5 units Basic Nutrition - 3 units Organic Chemistry and Lab - 5 units General Microbiology - 5 units Human Physiology and Lab - 5 units English Composition and Reading - 3 units
All prerequisites science courses must be completed 2002 or later in order to meet the 7 year recency requirement.
A 2 semester combination Anatomy and Physiology course may be subsituted for the Anatomy and Physiology requirement. A one semester survey course is not acceptable.
The following courses are corequisites to the program and may be completed either prior to entering the program or after the applicant is admitted to the program.
General Psychology - 3 units Introduction to Sociology or Minority Group Relations - 3 units Group Discussion or Public Speaking - 3 units
2. Applicants must hold a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.50 in all college coursework. Selection criteria -- to be applied to applicants who have met the minimum standards listed on the preceding page:
There is a cumulative total of 250 points possible in the following nine categories:
· GPA in prerequisite coursework · cumulative GPA in all college coursework · number of units completed at Taft College · progress towards the completion of general education requirements for the Associate Degree · attainment of a college degree · related work experience · quality of the applicant's personal statement · letters of recommendation
