General Information

Q: Where is the library?

A: Our address is 29 Emmons Park Dr., Taft, CA 93268. The library is right in the middle of campus, attached to the administration and student services offices. For a map of the campus, click here.

Q: What are your hours?

A: During the spring and fall semesters the library is open 8am-8pm Monday through Thursday, and 8am-5pm on Fridays. During the summer our hours are 8am-8pm, Monday through Thursday. During breaks and holidays the hours may be different; look for an announcement on the main library homepage or call 661-763-7707 with questions.

Library Cards

Q: How do I get a library card?

A: Come into the library during open hours and ask at the checkout desk. Members of the public will be issued a card after paying the appropriate fee. Official student IDs are free, but you'll need to bring in your class schedule or another document with your "A number" on it.

Q: Does it cost anything?

A: Not for students or faculty. If you're not connected with Taft College in any way, you may still be able to get a card (see the next question).

Q: Who is eligible for a library card?

A: There are several different kinds of cards. Here's a list:
  • TC Students: no charge for card; card does not expire
  • TC Faculty: no charge for card; card does not expire
  • Members of the public age 18 or older: $5 for one year or $2 for a one-day pass
  • Friends of the TC Library: card is free with membership
  • Lost cards carry a $2 replacement charge for all categories. Members of the public younger than 18 are not eligible for a card, though they can still visit the library (with adult supervision).

Q: What can I do with my card?

A: You need the card to get onto the computers in the library, as well as to check out materials. If you need to take a proctored exam, you will have to present the card to the proctor.

Q: How long can I check out?

A: Most books check out for three weeks. Magazines and videos go for one week, while other kinds of materials check out for varying lengths of time. You can see the details here.

Rules

Q: Can I bring my kids to the library?

A: If you're willing to look after them. Unattended children may be eaten by the staff.

Q: Was that a joke?

A: You don't want to find out, do you? Seriously, though, we do have board games and coloring books at the checkout desk, as well as a dedicated room for childrens' and young adult books. But please keep an eye on your kids.

Q: What about food?

A: No! No! Please! Even if you have a sealed bottle, even if you promise to clean up everything, even if your food is completely inedible to all forms of insect life, just...no. We might make an exception for water with a screw-on cap, but that's it. You can have snacks and drinks in the lobby area, but leave them on the cart by the entrance when you're in the library itself.

Q: Can I use my cell phone in the building?

A: We ask that you switch off the ringer on the phone--set it to vibrate, or turn off the phone altogether. We don't mind if you talk or text, as long as it doesn't disturb other people.

Q: How long can I use a study room?

A: You can check out a study room at the front desk of the library. The room checks out for two hours and can be renewed once.

Q: I forgot my library card. Can I still use the computers, just this once?

A: Sorry, but you need your library card to use any of the computers in the building. (Remember that the library is designed for the TC community, and your card shows that you are a member of this august society.) If you really can't find your card anywhere, we can issue you a new one.

Q: I'm a member of a rock band and we want to rehearse in the library, preferably during exam week. Is that okay?

A: The library's overall policy is, "Don't bother other people." If you can rehearse very, very quietly, okay. If not, try the parking lot.
