Online/Distance Learning FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
- What is an online course?
- An online course is one that uses the power of the Internet to
deliver content. Students access the course anytime, anywhere over the World
Wide Web. While the content is the same as an on-campus class, there are
no regular class meetings. All work will be done online.
- How are online assignments and tests done?
- Online assignments will often involve writing or doing research on
the Internet. These assignments will turned in as email attachments. There will
also be online forums or discussions which are done directly on the Internet.
There may also be online quizzes in which results are emailed to the instructor. However, since security of online testing cannot be guaranteed, tests
will be done at the Taft College campus or another proctored location.
- What do I need to take an online class?
- Online classes may be taken in a Taft College lab or from any
computer connected to the Internet. Students enrolled in online classes will be
given an account with email privileges.
To access the online classes from another location, you'll need:
- Computer, either IBM compatible or a Macintosh
- Modem, 56K or faster
- A web browser software, preferable Firefox 1.5.0.6 or Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher

- Are online classes transferable?
- Yes. Since the content is the same as a traditional class, online
classes carry the same transferability as on-campus classes.
- Are online classes easier than traditional classes?
- This is a frequent misconception. Actually, online classes require
much more involvement on the part of the student than traditional classes. In an
online class, you can't be passive. The student has to be constantly involved in
the learning process. Many times, students find that online classes require much
more self-discipline than than regular classes.
