This course studies the anatomical structures of the head and neck regions in detail and relates these structures to the clinical practice of dental hygiene. This course is taught by a slide series. Topics to be covered include:

Description- First semester, Second year students
This course in Periodontics teaches identification of the normal periodontium and recognition of deviations from normal and the etiology and principles of periodontal diseases, examination procedures, treatment and preventive measures. General topics to be covered include:
Normal periodontium- explanation of the normal tissues of the periodontium, anatomic characteristics and host response
Gingival diseases
Periodontal diseases
Microbiology of Periodontal diseases
Calculus and other disease associated factors
Clinical assessment, treatment and prognosis
Systemic factors influencing periodontal diseases
Periodontal emergencies
Periodontal maintenance and prevention
Occlusion and temporomandibular disorders
Epidemiology of periodontal diseases
Dntl 40 Periodontics II (1.5)
Description- Second semester, second year students
This class is designed to enhance assessment skills applicable in the treatment of patients with advanced periodontal disease. It covers dental hygienist ethical and clinical responsibility in periodontal disorders and teaches the legal ramifications and relationship of the specialty practice of periodontics within the broad scope of dentistry. Topics to be covered:
Etiology and treatment of caries
Implants
Treatment planning for the periodontal patient
Ethics
Special topics which may include:
a. Diagnostic testing and bacterial cultures
b. Diagnodent
c. Endodontic- periodontic lesions and their treatment
d. How to make a referral to a periodontist and other specialists
e. Prognosis
f. Periodontal Screening and recording (PSR)
g. possible other topics
Periodontal surgery- patient selection, periodontal surgery techniques- curretage, gingivectomy, periodontal flap surgery, mucogingival surgery
