Prerequisite knowledge/skills: Before entering the course the student should be able to

 

            1.         demonstrate skills in news and feature writing,

            2.         evaluate assigned stories to determine the best approach to completing the task,

            3.         differentiate between hard and soft news and opinion pieces,

            4.         identify and solve problems that arise during news‑gathering,

            5.         deduce valid conclusions based on information gathered from sources,

            6.         demonstrate sound interviewing techniques,

            7.         justify news judgments made during completion of assignments,

            8.         evaluate information gathered for stories,

             9.         apply principles of sound news judgment,

          10.          demonstrate the ability to meet story deadlines,

          11.          construct effective story leads,

          12.          demonstrate skill in editing copy,

          13.          write effective headlines,

          14.          demonstrate skill in editing copy,

          15.          identify what constitutes libel,

          16.          distinguish between rights and responsibilities of reporters, and

          17.          recite the canons of journalistic ethics.

 

 

Academic Honesty: Plagiarism will not be tolerated. Any student who plagiarizes will receive an "F" on that assignment and may be dropped from the class. We will discuss plagiarism in class. If you are not sure if you are plagiarizing or not, please ask me.
