Dennis McCall teaches speech and journalism and serves as public information officer and sports information director.  Speech classes offered by Taft College include Speech 11 (public speaking) and Speech 7 (small group discussion).  The journalism course is Journalism 8ABCD.  It can be taken four semesters.  Journalism 8 is a production class that produces the campus newspaper, the Cougar Echo.

Mr. McCall who has been teaching at Taft College for the past 26 years.  Prior to entering the teaching field, he was a professional journalist for 16 years, the last 10 years as editor of the Taft Daily Midway Driller.  He also was a reporter for the Bakersfield Californian and United Press International.

Mr. McCall is a graduate of  Taft Union High School and Taft College where he earned an Associate in Arts Degree.  He received his bachelor's degree in journalism from Fresno State University.  While attending Fresno State he served as production editor, news editor and editor-in-chief of the Daily Collegian, the campus daily.  He also received the Sigma Delta Chi outstanding journalism student award and served as president of the campus chapter and served on the university's Board of Publications.

After graduating from Fresno State, he accepted the editorship of the Daily Midway Driller where he won several Kern Press Club awards.  He began his career at Taft College in the fall of 1979 as adviser to the campus yearbook, the Black Gold, and as public information officer.  He later would become adviser to the Cougar Echo, the campus newspaper, and later became the primary speech instructor for the college.

He has been active in faculty organizations, serving as president in both the Academic Senate and the Faculty Association.  He also has served on a variety of campus committees, including the College Planning Council where he served as co-chair.

Mr. McCall continues to write for the Midway Driller.  He covers all Taft College sports for the paper and writes occasional feature stories. 

His interests include photography, spending as much time in the High Sierras, and attending college sports events.

Courses

Courses taught by Mr. McCall include Speech 11 (public speaking), Speech 7 (small group discussion), and Journalism 8ABCD (newspaper production).  All three are offered in the fall and spring.  Speech 11 also is offered during the summer intersession.
