Hum 1500-40 Introduction to the Humanities

This course introduces the student to a variety of media and themes depicting universal human experiences presented in the humanities (painting, sculpture, architecture, theatre, music, dance, and film).

    • Available Student Contact Hours: Tuesday and Thursday from 1:00 - 4:00 p.m.
    • The instructor will be available on campus during the week and can arrange to meet with students there.  And, the instructor will check for messages in the Private Message Center several times a day during the week, and at least one time during the weekends.  If you are an auditory learner, you may consider sending the instructor a phone number where she can call you and answer your questions or talk you through something. The course message center should be used for all on-line correspondence unless you need an immediate answer. In that case, call the instructor's office number and send a message through the Message Center.

  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Rental Textbook: The Arts~World Themes, Geraldine Nagle, (Brown & Benchmark, 1993) ISBN: 0-697-12048-1, available as a rental from the Taft College Bookstore or for purchase from several online bookstores.   • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend at least 8 to 10 hours per week reading, writing, and taking quizzes and exams.
  • Special Requirements: This course is structured as a online course using an Etudes shell to submit work and take exams. Students are welcome to use the computers in the LRC and computer labs to submit their work. Students must complete the Quiz on the Course Requirements by the due date or they will be dropped from the course. There is one review of a live performance or art exhibit assignment. If you select an activity where admission is charged, that is your expense.
  • Assignments & Tests: Students will complete 1 quiz, 5 exams, 5 postings, 1 comparison-contrast research paper, and 1 written review. The complete syllabus is in the class shell, as are the complete instructions. 
  • Proctored Exams: Yes, by the computer. Students are only allowed one entry per exam and the computer strictly enforced the time limit for the exams.  
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the first assignment deadline, it will be assume that you do not wish to stay in the class and you will be dropped from the course.  After that, it is your responsibility to drop. the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact the instructor, counseling center or the distance learning help desk to drop the course. This course is reading intensive, and having both a copy of the textbook and the time to read the assigned chapters are essential to succeeding in this course. Substantial writing assignments and/or papers will be expected.
  • New to ETUDES: Be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES.
