STAT 1510 Elementary Statistics

This course emphasizes descriptive statistics including sampling, sampling distributions, measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion, introductory treatment of probability and statistical inference with one and two sample problems, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing regarding means and proportions, and correlation and linear regression, ANOVA and nonparametric techniques such as the one-sample sign test, Wilcoxon rank-sum, Spearman’s correlation, odds ratios and Kruskal-Wallis.

  • Prerequisite: Math 1060 (formerly Mathematics 29) or two years of high school algebra with a grade of “C” or better

  • Textbook & Equipment:
    • Data Analysis – An Applied Approach to Statistics with Technology (2nd Edition), Jean, Meyers and Sporer (Required).
    • Data Analysis With The TI-83, Jean (Required).
    • Student Solution Manual (2nd Edition), Jean, Meyers and Sporer (Optional)
    • Equipment: A TI-83, TI-83 Plus or TI-84 calculator is required for this course. A variety of programs must be loaded on your calculator to be successful in this course. You can gain access to these programs online at http://faculty.taftcollege.edu/bjean/ (follow the Stat-1510 link) if you have a GraphLink cable for your TI-83 or a USB cable for your TI-84. Otherwise, you must get your calculator to me so I can load the programs on it for you. This must be accomplished immediately. Failure to have the programs loaded in your calculator will never be an excuse for not being able to complete an assignment.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 15 to 20 hours per week reading, writing, interacting online and completing quizzes/exams.
  • Special Requirements:  This course is delivered through the Moodle online classes learning system program (moodle.taftcollege.edu). Directions for the course are included in the course syllabus. All students are expected to have a reliable Internet connection, as all quizzes, along with other assignments, will be completed online. All papers are to be type written. Students are expected to work independently.

  • Assignments & TestsStudents will complete chapter quizzes, one midterm exam, one final exam, and various written assignments as outlined in the syllabus.
  • Proctored Exams: All exams (midterm and final exam, not quizzes) will be proctored. There will be no exceptions. Additional information on proctors is listed in the syllabus.
  • Additional Comments:  Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the first assignment deadline, I will assume you do not wish to stay in the class and drop you unless you contact me. After that, it is your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to drop the course.
