Music 1510-40 Music Appreciation
This course provides a general survey of music literature,
emphasizing, in order of priority, the following: (1) graded listening
techniques enabling students to hear music intelligently; (2) music
development in the great style periods; (3) music in historical-cultural
perspective; (4) music as related to art, religion, and science,
including relevant information about its leading figures and their
world; (5) elements of music form, and (6) technical elements of which a
musical work is fashioned.

The instructor can be reached Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to
4:00 p.m. at 606 Center Street in Taft, CA.

- Textbook & Estimated Costs:
Music An Appreciate by Roger Kamien
Estimated Time per week: Plan on three hours a week
reading and writing and two hours a week listening to C.D.'s
Assignments: Assignments will include concert reports,
assigned reading and listening, and tests on assigned reading and
listening.
Concerts: Students will be required to attend three concerts
and submit a written report. Concerts are offered each semester by Cal
State Bakersfield, Bakersfield Symphony, Santa Maria Symphony, Fresno
Philharmonic, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Fox Theater (Bakersfield), as
well as many others locations. Most good concerts are acceptable. At
least one concert report must be a traditional classic symphony concert.
Tests: All tests will be taken from material from out text
and listening assignments.
Grading: Grading will be based on written and listening
assignments, concert reports and tests given during the semester.
