Math 0240-40, Pre-Algebra
This course reviews basic skills necessary for beginning
algebra and provides an introduction to algebra. Topics include numbers
systems, operations with signed numbers, whole number exponents, order of
operations, introduction to the idea of variables, introduction to
inequalities, solutions to simple linear equations, and substituting into
formulas.
- Prerequisite:
Qualification by assessment process or Math 0230 or
one year of high school basic mathematics with a grade of "C" or better.

Textbook & Estimated Costs:
- Purchased Textbook: Prealgebra, 3rd Edition,
Lial and Hestwood, ISBN 0-321-36284-5. Includes: Book, MyMathLab,
Student Solution's Manual, Digital Video Tutor. This is
available in the Taft College Bookstore.
Videotapes of all topics included in the course are available in
the Taft College Learning Resource Center (LRC). These tapes may
be viewed in the LRC or may be checked out from the LRC. The videotapes may also be viewed
on-line by connecting to the Taft College streaming media site:

- Required Material: MyMathLab Student Access Kit
(included with textbook if purchased from Taft College bookstore
or can be purchased online at www.coursecompass.com).
Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend at least 8
to 10 hours per week reading, doing homework problems, watching math
videos and/or working on MyMathLab and taking tests.
Special Requirements: Since the entire class is conducted
online, you will need access to the internet and a valid email address
to use MyMathLab. Students will submit all homework and exams online.
Students are required to have the ability to use word processing, send
emails, and work independently.
Assignments & Tests: Homework, tests and the final
will be submitted through mymathlab.com. Details can be found in the
syllabus.
Proctored Exams: None.
Additional Comments: Attendance is measured by the
student’s participation and progress through the course. Students may be
dropped from the class if they are not making "continuing progress" in
the class. "Continuing Progress" is defined as taking the chapter tests
no later than the last day scheduled.
