MATH 0240-30, Pre-Algebra (Formerly Math 56)

This course reviews basic skills necessary for beginning algebra and provides an introduction to algebra. Topics include number systems, operations with signed numbers, whole number exponents, order of operations, introduction to the idea of variables, introduction to inequalities, solutions to simple linear equations, and substituting into formulas.

  • Prerequisite: Qualification by assessment process or Math 0230 (formerly Math 57) or one year of high school basic mathematics with a grade of "C" or better.

  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    •  Purchased Textbook: Prealgebra, 3rd Edition, Lial and Hestwood, ISBN 0-321-36284-5. This is available in the Taft College Bookstore. Videotapes of all topics included in the course are available in the Taft College Learning Resource Center (LRC). These tapes may be viewed in the LRC or may be checked out from the LRC. The videotapes may also be viewed on-line by connecting to the Taft College streaming media site: http://dli.taftcollege.edu/streams/index.html
  • Estimated Time Per Week:  Students can expect to spend at least 8 to 10 hours per week reading, doing homework problems, watching math videos and taking proctored tests.
  • Special Requirements:  Students are required to have the ability to work independently.

  • Proctored Exams: Yes. Tests are to be taken in the Taft College Library Learning Resource Center (LRC). If unable to do that, see the Proctor Identification Procedures for directions on how to set up a proctor for approval.
  • Additional Comments: Attendance is measured by the student’s participation and progress through the course. Students may be dropped from the class if they are not making "continuing progress" in the class. "Continuing Progress" is defined as taking the chapter tests no later than the last day scheduled.
