English 1000-40 English Fundamentals
This is a college preparatory course for those
students whose placement test scores indicate a need for a review of
the mechanics of written composition: sentence structure,
punctuation, vocabulary, and spelling. The course includes intensive
training in paragraph and essay writing, reading for understanding,
and learning the grammatical aspects of the English language.
Students must pass this course to graduate from Taft College. For
this reason, it represents the writing standards for the college and
students who pass the class must be expected to have achieved a
minimum level of competency in writing.
- Advisory
: Qualify by assessment process or pass English
0900 with a grade of "C" or better.

The instructor is not normally on campus during the summer
courses. The private message center in ETUDES is highly
recommended for questions or issues as they arise. The
Discussion area is where other students can also see your
question and provide their expertise. For some classes, the
chat room becomes a tremendous locus of activity and
information. You can make arrangements to meet with the
instructor by sending a request via the private message
center in ETUDES.
- Units
: 3
- Class Start and End
: June 8 - July 30, 2009- Textbook & Estimated Costs
:
- Purchased Textbook
: Brandon, Lee and Kathy Brandon.
Sentences, Paragraphs, and Beyond. Fifth Edition. New York:
Houghton Mifflin Company.
Make sure you have the correct edition.
- Estimated Time Per Week
: Students can expect to spend
approximately 8 to 10 hours per week reading, writing, and
taking quizzes and exams.
- Special Requirements
: This
course is distance learning online using the ETUDES format.
Students must turn in their assignment on time during the first
week of class online or risk being dropped from the course.
- Assignments & Tests
: IIn
Etudes, read the Syllabus section to prepare for the course. The
assignments for each week are described in the Tasks, Tests, and
Surveys area. In front of each listing, there is an icon. There
is a Survey icon for lecture and directions for the week, and
you do not submit in those areas. There is a test icon for those
listings corresponding to tests you take in ETUDES and submit.
There is an Assignment icon for the written assignments, which
you either copy and paste or attach and then submit. Tests are
automatically graded and returned to all students on a date
after final submission. Written submissions rely upon me to
grade them and return them, so receiving grades on those will
never be as fast. As I grade written work, I return them to you
with my comments and the score. There is a two day grace period
for submissions until the last week of the session, which has a
hard deadline.
- Proctored Exams
: None
- Additional Comments
: Because
this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue.
Turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the first
assignment deadline, I will assume you do not wish to stay in
the class and drop you unless you contact me. After that, it is
your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be
backdated. Contact the counseling center or the distance
learning help desk to drop the course. Plagiarism (copying or
using work not your own) will earn zero points. Let me know if
you have a learning disability and any accommodations approved
by our LD Specialist. I am happy to help. Do take advantage of
the Private Message Center and the Discussion area. Often other
students can provide the answers you need nearly as well as I
can.
