Stat 10: Elementary Statistics

This course emphasizes descriptive statistics including sampling, sampling distributions, measures of central tendency and measures of dispersion, introductory treatment of probability and statistical inference with one and two sample problems, confidence intervals and hypothesis testing regarding means and proportions, and correlation and linear regression, ANOVA and nonparametric techniques such as the one-sample sign test, Wilcoxon rank-sum, Spearman’s correlation, odds ratios and Kruskal-Wallis.

  • Prerequisite: Mathematics 52 (formerly Mathematics 29) or two years of high school algebra with a grade of "C" or better

  • Textbook:
    • Data Analysis – "An Applied Approach to Statistics with Technology", Jean, Meyers and Sporer (Required).
    • "Data Analysis With The TI-83", Jean (Required).
    • Student Solution Manual, Jean, Meyers and Sporer (Optional)
    • Equipment: A TI-83, TI-83 Plus or TI-84 calculator is required for this course. A variety of programs must be loaded on the calculator to be successful in this course. If you have a GraphLink cable you can gain access to these programs online at http://www.taftcollege.edu/faculty/bjean (follow the Stat-10 link) Otherwise, you must get your calculator to Carl Mallory at Taft College so he can load the programs on it for you. This must be accomplished immediately. Failure to have the programs loaded in your calculator will never be an excuse for not being able to complete an assignment.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend at least 15-25 hours per week reading, doing problems, watching Videos or MIMIO lectures and taking tests.
  • Special Requirements:  Students are expected to have basic computer knowledge of word processing, downloading files, passwords, etc. and internet access with a valid email address, Students will submit work via proctors and the U.S. Postal mail, through the TC aides at TCI, or in the TC Learning Resource Center. This course is not delivered online.
  • Assignments & Tests: Students will complete several chapter exams, a final exam, and various written assignments as outlined in the syllabus. All exams will be proctored. Additional information about proctors is given in the syllabus.
  • Assignments & Tests:  Students have at least 2 main sources of instructional content.  The primary source of course material is to view the lectures [on CD or on-line] prepared by the textbook author, Brian Jean. The instructor, Thomas Teegarden has also prepared some MIMIO Presentations that are designed for use with the corresponding section in the textbook and the textbook authored presentations. The flexible format of the class allows student control of the work schedule within the confines of the deadlines in the Course Calendar. Click on the Link to Syllabus below for the Course Calendar, etc. It should be noted that this course is a university level mathematics course and since the summer session is only 8 weeks in length, the course is intensive in both time and work commitment.
  • Homework will not be collected but students are expected to do a reasonable number of practice problems. Details can be found in the syllabus.
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is. If you cannot keep the pace of the course, it is your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated.
