Span 1: Elementary Spanish

Spanish 1 is an introductory Spanish course where students study pronunciation, vocabulary, sentence structure, grammar, and cultural readings that develop the four language skills: listening, reading, speaking and writing. The final goal of the course is to provide the foundations for oral comprehension and proficiency in using the Spanish language in real communicative situations at the introductory level. The audio CD’s are very important for the distance learning classes. The tests will be similar to the workbook. (Please call the bookstore for information on the audio CD’s 763-7731. The audio CD’s are NOT optional).

  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Rental Textbook: ¡Hola, amigos! (6th Edition) Houghton Mifflin Company, 2004. ISBN: 0-618-01183-8. It’s available as a rental from the Taft College Bookstore. Rental Price is 20% of the cost of the textbook.
    • Purchase Workbook: ¡Hola, amigos! (6th Edition) Houghton Mifflin Company (2004) workbook and audio CD’s. The workbook price is about $62.05 and the audio CD’s price is about $55.40. Bookstore:(661) 763-7731 LRC: (661) 763-7783. The audio CD’s are available at TCI for TCI students.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 10 hours per week reading, studying, completing the workbook/lab manual and taking quizzes and exams.
  • Special Requirements: The entire course will be conducted off-line. Students are required to mail and/or fax in their workbook/lab manual. Students may also turn in assignments in the LRC. Students that cant take the exams in the LRC are required to send a proctor form. 
  • Assignments & Tests:  Students will complete 6 lessons in the workbook/laboratory manual and take 2 quizzes, 2 exams, and 1 composition covering Leccin 1 to Leccin 6.
  • Proctored Exams: All quizzes and exams are to be proctored. See the Proctor Identification Procedures for directions on how to set up a proctor for approval.
