Soc 2: American Social Problems

This course includes the identification and analysis of a variety of contemporary social problems in American society. Attention is given to drug abuse, crime, poverty, discrimination, physical and mental illness, sexual deviance, urban decay, environmental problems, war, terrorism, and other social problems. 48 hours lecture Transfer Credit: CSU: UC (CAN – SOC 4)

    • The instructor’s office is off campus. He can be reached, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday thru Friday by telephone. Phone calls will be taken during office hours or at other times agreed upon between the student and instructor. If you need an immediate answer, call the office number or email the instructor.

  • Class Meets: June 16 - August 7, 2008
  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Rental Textbook: Coleman, James William and Harold R. Kerbo. Social Problems. 9th Ed. Upper Saddle River, NJ: Prentice Hall, 2006.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 8 to 10 hours per week reading, writing, and taking quizzes and exams.
  • Special Requirements: This is an OFF-line course but can also be taken ONLINE as well.

    • If taken Offline: Directions for the course are included in the course syllabus. Students can submit their work via U.S. postal mail, or email. Papers are to be type written. Students are expected to work independently.

    • Online Option: This is an off-line course but it is available to take on-line using ETUDES-NG. I strongly recommend that you take this class on-line if you have internet access. The on-line class allows for discussions among the class and adds an excellent learning opportunity for you. You will still work at your own pace within the normal schedule guidelines. -- You MUST contact me either by email (mwhyte@taftcollege.edu) or by phone (661-835-7335) to tell me which way you intend to take the class – either online or as a traditional correspondence course (offline).

  • Assignments & Tests: 8 Observation Journal assignments, 12 Module assignments, 1 Mid Term and 1 Final Examination
  • Proctored Exams: Proctors are NOT needed
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance-learning course, attendance is not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the first assignment deadline, I will assume you do not wish to stay in the class and drop you unless you contact me. After that, it is your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to drop the course.
