PSYC 1A: Introduction to Psychology

Scientific study of behavior and mental processes through the exploration of major theories and concepts, methods, and research findings. Topics include the biological bases of behavior; perception; cognition; learning; emotion and motivation; lifespan development; personality; social psychology; psychological disorders; therapy; and applied psychology.

    • The instructor will be available on campus during office hours, 8:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday thru Thursday in person or you may contact me by telephone. Phone calls will be taken during office hours or at other times agreed upon between the student and instructor. Messages will be answered and assignments will be graded daily.

  • Class Meets: June 16 – August 7, 2008
  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Rental Textbook: Understanding Psychology (8th edition) Charles G. Morris with Albert A. Maisto (Prentice Hall, Inc., 2008), available as a rental from the Taft College Bookstore for approximately $ 20.00 (less if you have an ASB card) or you go to an online bookstore to purchase the book. ISBN: 978-0-2333514-0. Just make sure you get the 8th edition.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 10 to 12 hours per week reading, writing, and taking quizzes and exams. 
  • Special Requirements:  The entire course will be conducted online through the ETUDES-NG program. Students are required to have Internet access, the ability to use word processing, conduct Internet searches, attach files, send emails, and other basic computer skills. Students are expected to work independently.
  • Assignments & Tests: Students will complete 1 biography assignment, 3 concept papers, 2 discussion topics, 1 wrap-up assignment and 4 exams.
  • Proctored Exams: No
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue; however, turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the first assignment deadline, I will assume you do not wish to stay in the class and drop you unless you contact me. After that, it is your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to drop the course. I look forward to working with you.
  • New to ETUDES-NG: Be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES-NG. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES-NG.
