Math 56: Prealgebra
This course reviews basic skills necessary for beginning
algebra and provides an introduction to algebra. Topics include numbers
systems, operations with signed numbers, whole number exponents, order of
operations, introduction to the idea of variables, introduction to
inequalities, solutions to simple linear equations, and substituting into
formulas.
- Prerequisite:
Qualification by assessment process or Math 57 or
one year of high school basic mathematics with a grade of "C" or better.

Class Meets: June 16, 2008 - August 7, 2008
Required Textbook: Prealgebra, 3nd Edition, Lial and
Hestwood, ISBN 0-321-26662-5 Includes: Book, MyMathLab, Student
Solution's Manual, Digital Video Tutor. The textbook is available in the
college bookstore.
Estimated Time Per Week: Chapters 1-10 will be covered. The
course is self-paced. The text/workbook is excellent and provides
abundant examples that will allow the student to determine which areas
he/she needs instructor or tutorial help. MyMathLab is also available to
help you successfully complete the class. Expect to spend 8-12 hours per
week.
Special Requirements: Internet connection, and a valid
email address to use MyMathLab are strongly recommended. Students will
submit work via a proctor and the U.S. Postal mail or through the Taft
College Learning Resource Center.
Assignments & Tests: : Homework will not be collected
but students are expected to do a reasonable number of practice

Proctored Exams: Exams include proctored Chapter tests and a
Final exam. See the Proctor
Identification Procedures for directions on how to set up a proctor
for approval.
Additional Comments: Attendance is measured by the
student’s participation and progress through the course. Students may be
dropped from the class if they are not making "continuing progress" in
the class. "Continuing Progress" is defined as participating in the
class discussions and taking the chapter tests no later than the last
day scheduled.
