Math 50: Introductory Algebra

Math 50 is an introductory course in elementary algebra and will introduce the main topics of algebra, which are pre-algebra review, the real number system, solving equations and inequalities, graphing linear equations, exponents and polynomials, factoring and graphing linear systems. The first six chapters in the text will be covered as well as the review chapter.

  • Prerequisite: Qualification by assessment process or completion of Math 56 with a grade of "C" or better.
  • Advisory:  Eligibility for English 54 strongly recommended

    • Videotapes of all topics included in the course are available in the Taft College Learning Resource Center (LRC). These tapes may be viewed in the LRC or may be checked out from the LRC. The videotapes may also be viewed on-line by connecting to the Taft College streaming media site: http://dli.taftcollege.edu/streams/index.html  
  • Estimated Time Per Week:   Students can expect to spend at least 10-12 hours per week reading, doing problems, watching Videos and taking proctored tests.
  • Special Requirements:  Be able to work independently.

  • Proctored Exams: Yes.  See the Proctor Identification Procedures for directions on how to set up a proctor for approval.
  • Additional Comments:  Attendance is measured by the student’s participation and progress through the course. Students may be dropped from the class if they are not making "continuing progress" in the class. "Continuing Progress" is defined as taking the chapter tests no later than the last day scheduled.
