English 50-14 English Fundamentals

This is a college preparatory course for those students whose placement test scores indicate a need for a review of the mechanics of written composition: sentence structure, punctuation, vocabulary, and spelling. The course includes intensive training in paragraph and essay writing, reading for understanding, and learning the grammatical aspects of the English language. Students must pass this course to graduate from Taft College. For this reason, it represents the writing standards for the college and students who pass the class must be expected to have achieved a minimum level of competency in writing.

  • Advisory: Qualify by assessment process or pass English 55 with a grade of "C" or better.

Course Details

  • Instructor: Devine
    • E-Mail: bdevine@taft.org
    • Telephone: 661.763.7883
    • You can make arrangements to meet with the instructor, but the most effective means of communication for online students is the private message center built into Etudes-NG. If you require a face to face meeting, let’s make an appointment to ensure a successful rendezvous. I live in Bakersfield and have no reason to go to Taft during the summer.
  • Units: 3
  • Class Start and End: June 16 - August 7, 2008. I will make the class accessible on June 16.
  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Purchased Textbook: Brandon, Lee and Kathy Brandon. Sentences, Paragraphs, and Beyond. Fifth Edition. New York: Houghton Mifflin Company.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 8 to 10 hours per week reading, writing, and taking quizzes and exams.
  • Special Requirements: This course is distance learning online using the ETUDES format. Students must contact the instructor during the first week of class online to remain in the course.
  • Assignments & Tests: In Etudes, read the Syllabus section to prepare for the course. The assignments for each week are described in the Assignments area. You take tests in the Tests and Quizzes area. You submit written assignments in the Assignments area. Not all listings in the Assignments area require submissions, only those worth points and requiring written work.
  • Proctored Exams: None
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the first assignment deadline, I will assume you do not wish to stay in the class and drop you unless you contact me. After that, it is your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to drop the course. Plagiarism (copying or using work not your own) will earn zero points.  Let me know if you have a learning disability and any accommodations approved by our LD Specialist.  I am happy to help.  For most of June, I will be in Japan, but I will have daily access to the course.  Do take advantage of the Private Message Center and the Discussion area.  Often other students can provide the answers you need nearly as well as I can.
  • New to ETUDES-NG: be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES-NG. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES-NG.
