DSE 4-80, Cultural Competency

This course helps students develop cultural awareness and to understand how to work with people who have a wide variety of personal perspectives, cultures, and life circumstances. The student will develop increased cultural competency by learning about the five elements of cultural competence: 1) valuing diversity; 2) understanding your own culture; 3) understanding when culture may be affecting interactions between persons and among groups; 4) knowing where to find good resources; and 5) knowing how to change your behavior to meet the cultural needs of others.

    • The instructor will be available on campus Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am - 5:00 pm in person or by telephone. Messages will be answered daily. Phone calls will be taken during office hours or at other times agreed upon between the student and instructor.

    • Check with the bookstore regarding any additional fees
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 8 to 12 hours per week reading, writing, and taking quizzes and participating in class discussions. 
  • Special Requirements:  The entire course will be conducted on-line through the ETUDES program. Students are required to have Internet access, an active email account, the ability to use word processing, conduct Internet searches, attach files, send emails, and work independently.
  • Assignments & Tests: Students will complete weekly quizzes, weekly journal and discussion assignments, midterm and final projects.
  • Proctored Exams: No
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue; however, turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the first assignment deadline. It is your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact the counseling center, the distance learning help desk or me directly at 661.763.7841 to drop the course.
  • New to ETUDES: Be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES.
