DSE 1-80, Introduction to Developmental Disabilities

This course will provide a background in the history, language, basic concepts of services for people with developmental disabilities, and terms and vocabulary that are important to the field of developmental disabilities.  In addition, students will become more effective communicating with others and in understanding the system that is part of the developmental disabilities field.  The course will also detail ethics, confidentiality, and mandated data privacy and how they tie together.

    • The instructor is on campus Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 3:00 pm in person or by telephone. However, it is recommended that you make an appointment. Messages will be answered daily. Phone calls will be taken during office hours or at other times agreed upon between the student and instructor.

  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Purchase: Enhancing the lives of adults with developmental disabilities, Dale DiLeo. ISBN: 978-1883302382  List price $25.00 or rental.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 8 to 12 hours per week reading, writing, and taking quizzes and participating in class discussions. 
  • Special Requirements:  The entire course will be conducted on-line through the Etudes-NG program. Students are required to have Internet access, an active email account, the ability to use word processing, conduct Internet searches, attach files, send emails, and work independently.
  • Assignments & Tests: Students will complete weekly quizzes, weekly journal and discussion assignments, participate in the chat room, one research paper, and one final exam.
  • Proctored Exams: No
  • Additional Comments:  Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue; however, turning assignments in on time is. If there is a waiting list and if you do not meet the first assignment deadline, I will assume you do not wish to stay in the class and drop you unless you contact me. After that or if there is not waiting list, it is your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to drop the course. 
  • New to ETUDES-NG: Be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES-NG. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES-NG.
