Math 18-80 Mathematics for a Modern Society

This course is designed for students majoring in liberal arts. Mathematics for a modern society is an applications-orientated course involving the study of topics in the following areas: Critical Thinking, Approaches to Problem Solving, Numbers in the Real World, Financial Management, Statistical Reasoning, Probability, and Exponential Modeling.

    • The instructor will be available on campus during the office hours listed in the syllabus or by appointment. The course discussion and private messages area should be used for all online course correspondence.

  • Class Meets: January 28 - May 29, 2008
  • Required Textbook: Essentials of Using and Understanding Mathematics A Quantitative Reasoning Approach, 2nd Edition, Bennett and Briggs, ISBN 0-201-79387-3. Available as a rental from the Taft College bookstore.
  • Supplemental Material: MyMathLab standalone Student Access Kit, ISBN 0-321-19991-X. Available at the Taft College bookstore.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 8 to 12 hours per week completing homework assignments, lab assignments and tests.
  • Special Requirements:  The entire course will be conducted online through the Etudes-NG program. Students are required to have Internet access, an active email account, the ability to use word processing, attach files, send emails, and work independently.
  • Assignments & Tests:  Students will complete 12 lab assignments, 7 homework assignments, 7 unit tests, and a final exam.
  • Proctored Exams: All chapter tests and the final exam are proctored. Remote students need to arrange for a proctor as soon as possible. Refer to the proctor information located in the syllabus or on the distance learning homepage. Please mail, email, or fax your proctor forms to the instructor as soon as possible. Local students who plan to come to the Taft College campus to take their tests in the Learning Resource Center (LRC) need to send the instructor a message so that their tests will be available when they go to the LRC to complete them.
  • Additional Comments:  It is the student’s responsibility to drop the course if they find they are unable to complete the course requirements. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to submit drop slips.
  • New to ETUDES-NG: be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES-NG. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES-NG.
