INCO 48-82 Information Competency and Bibliography

This class introduces you to the basics of research -- were to look for information, how to use it, and how to decide if it's helpful or not. The methods taught in this course can be applied to all kinds of research in all subjects.

  • Prerequisite: None
  • Advisory: Eligibility for English 50 and 54 strongly recommended; pre- or co-requisite to English 1A

  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Gibaldi, Joseph. MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers. 6th ed. New York: Modern Language Association of America, 2003.
    • NOTE:  You are NOT required to purchase this book. You can find it in the Taft Library and in most public libraries. Be sure you get the complete MLA Handbook (it's 361 pages long) and not the smaller guideline edition in the TC bookstore.
  • Estimated Time Per Week:   4 hours, including classroom time.
  • Special Requirements:   Some assignments require the use of a library.
  • Assignments & Tests:  Seven quizzes and weekly assignments. The final project consists of a bibliography or list of works cited.
  • Proctored Exams: None.
  • Additional Comments: Since this class has only 8 meetings, it is essential that you keep up!
