CJA 35-80 Public Safety Communications

This is an introductory course dealing with all aspects of public safety communication. It will cover the techniques of effectively communicating facts, information, and ideas in a clears and logical manner for a variety of public safety systems reports, i.e. crime/violations/incident reports, letters, memoranda, directives, and administrative reports. Students will gain practical experience in interviewing, note taking, report writing, and testifying.

  • Textbook & Estimated Cost:
    • Rental Textbook: Brown, Jerrold G. and Clarice R. Cox, Report Writing for Criminal Justice Professional, 2nd editions. Contact the Book Store for price for purchase or price and conditions for renting.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students should plan to spend the same amount of time expected in a live classroom course to be successful with homework and tests. Estimated time per week is approximately 4 to 6 hours.
  • Assignments & Tests:  Assignments are made on a weekly basis and include reading, answering questions, and participating in class discussions through the Etudes system. There are weekly open book quizzes given during the semester with the Final. Due dates for the assignments and tests are critical. There will also be a final exam and a research paper.
  • Proctored Exams: None
  • Additional Comments:  When you login to the course, click first on the Classroom Section and go to the Syllabus and Schedule. Each week will have a lecture and your assignments and tests. For your assignments go to the Assignments section in the left hand menu. Then click on the WEEK 1 Assignments. For your tests go the Test Center and click on the appropriate test. You will be prompted from there into beginning your study. Please stay up with the class assignments and tests.
  • New to ETUDES-NG:  be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES-NG. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES-NG.
