CJA 34-80 Correctional Interviewing and Counseling
This course is an overview of the techniques in counseling available
to practitioners in corrections. The student will learn the use of
appropriate techniques and theories in confidence building which the
correctional employee may use in inmate interviews and counseling. This
is a basic course for students planning to enter or already employed
within the correctional science field.

The class will be available for access on
January 28, 2008.
- Textbook & Estimated Cost:
- Rental Textbook: Correctional Counseling and
Rehabilitation (4th edition) David Lester, Michael Braswell, and
Patricia Van Voorhis. Anderson Publishing. (ISBN 1-58360-505-3)
Available as a rental from the Taft College Library or for purchase
from several online bookstores. Contact Book Store for price for
purchase or price and conditions for renting.
- Estimated Time Per Week:
Students can expect to
spend 8-10 hours per week reading, writing, in on-line discussions, and
taking quizzes.
- Special Requirements: The
entire course will be conducted online. Students are required to have
Internet access, the ability to use word processing, conduct Internet
searches, attach files, send emails and work independently.
- Assignments & Tests:
This course is divided into five modules.
Each module requires:
- Reading lecture material (located in the classroom),
- Textbook assignments and a short (2-4 page) writing assignment
(located in the Assignment area),
- A quiz (located in the Testing area), and
- Participation in a discussion with other class members (in the
Lounge).
- In addition, a comprehensive final (7-10 page) paper will be
required.
- Proctored Exams: There are no proctored exams and
no proctor is required.
- Additional Comments:
This is an online
course. Attendance will be determined by your participation in the
discussion and turning in assignments on time. If you do not participate
in class within the first three weeks, I reserve the right to drop you,
although you are ultimately responsible to make sure that occurs. If you
are not dropped officially, and you do not attend, you will receive a
failure for this course on your transcript.
