CJA 1-80 Introduction to Criminal Justice

This course provides students with an understanding of history and philosophy of the criminal justice system in America, identifies the various sub-system, role expectations and their interaction, evaluates theories of crime, punishment and rehabilitation, ethics, education and training for professionalism in the system. This is a three-unit course, and is transferable.

  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Rental Textbook: Textbook: "Introduction to Criminal Justice" by Senna and Siegal , 10th ed.", ISBN 0-534-62946-6. Rental price is 20% of the cost of the book.  Contact the bookstore for rental costs.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Your assignments must be completed as listed in your class. The due dates for the tests and essays are critical. You will need Internet access since all of the course will be conducted online. No campus visits are necessary, but if you live near Taft, campus resources are available to you. As with any College Course, you should plan to spend at least 1 hour to 3 hours in study for every 1-unit hour a week on the course.
  • Assignments & Tests:  This class is run on a week-to-week basis requiring a quiz or short essay(s) to be submitted weekly.
  • Proctored Exams: NONE
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the first assignment deadline, I will assume you do not wish to stay in the class and drop you unless you contact me. After that, it is your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to submit drop slips.
  • New to ETUDES-NG: be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES-NG. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES-NG.
