BUS 54A-70 Office Procedures

This comprehensive course for secretarial and clerical majors; provides training in general office procedures, including filing, postal services, telephone techniques, use of transcribing machines and other office machines. It introduces basic data and word processing concepts, telecommunications technology and stresses the importance of office relations, good grooming, and personality development.

      The instructor will be available on campus during office hours, 8:30 a.m. – 9 a.m., Tuesday in person or by telephone. Messages will be answered and assignments will be graded on those days. Phone calls will be taken during office hours or at other times agreed upon between the student and instructor.

  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Purchase: Technology & Procedures for Administrative Professionals (12th Edition) Fulton-Calkins, Patsy (SouthWestern Publishing 2003) ISBN # 0538725907.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 3-6 hours per week reading, writing, and taking quizzes and exams.
  • Special Requirements:  Access to an IBM compatible computer system. Windows-based operating system, Microsoft Word and internet capabilities are recommended for submitting assignments electronically.
  • Assignments: There are fifteen assignments. A minimum of one assignment is due each week. The assignments are identified on an assignment sheet. Some assignments may suggest teamwork. However, it will not apply and each student is to perform the task independently. Assignments may be submitted via fax, email, US postal service, the Counseling Center, Learning Resource Center (LRC), T-10, and TCI education departments. A disk is not required to complete the assignments, although one is included in the text. All assignments turned in will receive a minus (-) or a plus (+); no letter grade is assigned. Any assignment receiving a minus must be corrected and resubmitted. All assignments should be typed. Non-typists can print legibly in blue or black ink NO PENCIL.
  • Tests: A comprehensive final exam can be taken upon completion of all assignments. The exam is retained by the instructor and students will be notified of their grade.
  • Proctored Exams: Yes. Proctor must meet established standards. Contract the instructor or access the distance learning website for additional information.
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the first assignment deadline, I will assume you do not wish to stay in the class and drop you unless you contact me. After that, it is your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to submit drop slips.
