Biology 1-80 Fundamentals of Biology

This online, interactive Biology class is an introductory course designed to survey the principles of biology. Cell theory, cell division, heredity, evolution and ecology, anatomy and physiology of plants and animals, and the classification system are included.

Students work independently at their own pace. A student lounge will be available for student chat. Science databases will be discussed in order for students to access up-to-date research and information on a variety of topics as they pertain to this course.

As you begin your course, you will find information regarding opportunities for real time chat with your instructor.

    The class will be available for access on January 28, 2008.
  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Rental Textbook: Johnson, George B. The Living World. 4th edition; Boston: McGraw-Hill. Available as a rental from the Taft College Library or for purchase from several online bookstores.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 8 to 10 hours per week reading, writing, doing a research paper, and taking quizzes and exams.
  • Special Requirements: The course will be conducted online. Students are required to have Internet access, the ability to use word processing, conduct Internet searches, attach files, send emails, and work independently.
  • Assignments & Tests: Students will take exams, including the final exam, weekly assignments and quizzes, and a research paper.
  • Proctored Exams: None
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the first assignment deadline, I will assume you do not wish to stay in the class and drop you unless you contact me. After that, it is your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to submit drop slips.
