Math 0240-40, Pre-Algebra
This course reviews basic skills necessary for beginning
algebra and provides an introduction to algebra. Topics include numbers
systems, operations with signed numbers, whole number exponents, order of
operations, introduction to the idea of variables, introduction to
inequalities, solutions to simple linear equations, and substituting into
formulas.
- Prerequisite:
Qualification by assessment process or Math 0230 or
one year of high school basic mathematics with a grade of "C" or better.

- The instructor will be available on campus during the office
hours listed in the syllabus or by appointment. The course
discussion and private messages area should be used for all online
course correspondence. My office is S5E and is located in the
Science building.

Class Meets: August 24 - December 17, 2009
Textbook: Prealgebra, 4th Edition, Lial and Hestwood,
ISBN 0-321-56792-7. The textbook is available at the
Taft College bookstore.
Required Material: MyMathLab Student Access Code. The
access code can be purchased at the Taft College bookstore or can be
purchased online at www.coursecompass.comEstimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend
approximately 8 to 12 hours per week completing homework/lab assignments and
tests.
Special Requirements: The entire course will be conducted
on-line. Students are required to have Internet access, the ability to
use word processing, send emails, and work independently.
Assignments & Tests: Students will complete 60
homework/lab assignments, 9 chapter tests, and a final exam.
Proctored Exams: No, all chapter tests and homework assignments
will be completed online through the www.coursecompass.com Web site.
Additional Comments: It is the student’s responsibility to
drop the course if they find they are unable to complete the course
requirements. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning
help desk to drop the course. Students who do not complete any
assignments during the first week of class will be dropped unless they
contact the instructor.
