MATH 0240-30, Pre-Algebra

This course reviews basic skills necessary for beginning algebra and provides an introduction to algebra. Topics include number systems, operations with signed numbers, whole number exponents, order of operations, introduction to the idea of variables, introduction to inequalities, solutions to simple linear equations, and substituting into formulas.

  • Prerequisite: Qualification by assessment process or Math 0230 or one year of high school basic mathematics with a grade of "C" or better.

  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Required ebook: The textbook Prealgebra, 4th Edition, Lial and Hestwood, ISBN 0-321-56792-7 is available at the Taft College bookstore. Videotapes of all topics included in the course are available in the Taft College Learning Resource Center (LRC). These tapes may be viewed in the LRC or may be checked out from the LRC. The videotapes may also be viewed on-line by connecting to the Taft College streaming media site:  http://dli.taftcollege.edu/streams/index.html
  • Estimated Time Per Week:   Students can expect to spend approximately 8 to 12 hours per week completing homework assignments and tests.
  • Special Requirements:  Be able to work independently.
  • Assignments & Tests:  Students will complete 52 homework assignments, 9 chapter tests, and a final exam.
  • Proctored Exams: Yes. See the Proctor Identification Procedures for directions on how to set up a proctor for approval.
  • Additional Comments: It is the student’s responsibility to drop the course if they find they are unable to complete the course requirements. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to submit drop slips.
