Math 0230-30, Basic Mathematics

Math 0230 is designed to teach and reinforce basic proficiency in the basic ideas and skills of arithmetic, which are: whole numbers, adding subtracting, multiplying and dividing fractions, decimals, ratio and proportions, and percents. Only chapters 1-6 will be covered.

    •  Essential Mathematics, 3rd edition. Margaret L. Lial, Stanley A. Salzman, ISBN 0-321-57580-6, Includes: Book, MyMathLab, Student Solution’s Manual, Digital Video Tutor. This is available in the Taft College Bookstore.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Math 0230 will introduce the concepts of arithmetic and will cover Chapters 1 to 6 in the text. The course is self-paced. Course Compass provides abundant examples that will allow the student to determine which areas he/she needs instructor or tutorial help. Expect to spend 8 to 12 hours per week doing homework problems, watching tutorials, and taking tests.
  • Special Requirements: Be able to work independently within assignment’s deadlines.
  • Assignments & Tests:  Homework and Tests will be submitted through the Taft College Learning Resource Center. If unable to make it to Taft, work is submitted via a proctor and the U.S. Postal mail. Details about assignments can be found in the syllabus.
  • Proctored Exams: Yes. See the Proctor Identification Procedures for directions on how to set up a proctor for approval.
  • Additional Comments: Attendance is measured by the student’s participation and progress through the course. Students may be dropped from the class if they are not making "continuing progress" in the class. "Continuing Progress" is defined as taking the chapter tests no later than the last day scheduled.
