  • Estimated Time per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 10 to 12 hours per week reading, writing, and taking exams.
  • Special Requirements: This course will be delivered entirely Off-Line. Students are not required to have Internet access; however, you need to have access to email. Students using a proctor for exams (only out-of-immediate area students) need to submit a signed proctor form (see Distance Learning section on Taft College website) to the instructor at the beginning of the course. If the instructor does not have a signed proctor form BY August 31st, at least the 1st exam must be taken in the Library on the Taft College campus. This is to allow time for the instructor to contact the proctor for approval (this is done by email, so have an accurate email address for your proctor on the form), and then mailing the exam to the proctor if they are approved. Students must be self-motivated and work independently to be successful in this course.
  • Assignments & Tests: Students will be responsible for the following assignments, projects, papers, and exams:
    • Assess Yourself Questionnaire, DO NOT WRITE IN THE TEXT. 50 points possible. Due September 11th. This will be mailed to you.
    • Behavior Change Contract, DO NOT WRITE IN THE TEXT. 50 points possible. Due September 11th. This will be mailed to you.
    • Food Journal with evaluation (see Chapter 8) Due October 2nd, 50 points possible. Instructions will be mailed to you.
    • Family Health Tree project Due November 20th, 100 points possible. Example chart will be mailed to you; however, you may use your own chart if you wish. You will either mail this document to me or it can be turned in at the Library on campus.

When mailing this or any other project to me, IT NEEDS TO BE POSTMARKED BY THE DUE DATE TO AVOID A LATE PENALTY.

    • Exam 1 - to be taken on Monday, September 14th, Chapters 1-5, 100 points possible.
    • Exam 2 - to be taken on Monday, October 5th, Chapters 6-10, 100 points possible.
    • Exam 3 - to be taken on Monday, November 2nd, Chapters 11-15, 100 points possible.
    • Final Exam - to be taken on Thursday, December 10th, Chapters 16-21, 126 points possible.
    • If you miss an exam, I take it out of the Library and you then must contact me to set a date to take it. I do not leave exams in the Library indefinitely!

  • Proctored Exams: Proctored Exams: Yes, for non-Taft area residents. If you are using a proctor, it is your responsibility to provide that proctor with 4-9”X 12” manila envelopes, with postage attached, to mail your exams back to me. Taft-area students are expected to take exams in the LRC on the TC campus, proctored by college staff.
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is (late penalties are severe). The due dates for all projects are listed both on this Orientation sheet and the course Syllabus. If you do not meet the first assignment deadline, or take the first exam, I will assume you do not wish to stay in the class and I will drop you unless you contact me. Here are some helpful suggestions for successfully completing the course:
    • Follow the schedule on the syllabus.
    • Read each chapter, and then create a set of notes to study.
    • Study all terms -- any of them could appear on an exam.
    • Do any of the review activities that may help you at the end of each chapter. These do not need to be turned in to me.
    • Turn in assignments and take exams on the date listed -- all late work is docked (10% the 1st week, 20% the 2nd week) and not accepted at all if more than two weeks late.
    • Exams are a combination of multiple choice and true/false.
    • STUDENTS NEED TO USE SCANTRON SHEETS ON EXAMS -- PREFERABLY FORM #882-E, AVAILABLE IN ANY COLLEGE BOOKSTORE.
