English 1600-30 (Formerly English 1B) Critical Thinking, Literature, and Composition

This course focuses on critical thinking and composition through reading of essays, poetry and fiction; introduces critical evaluation; develops techniques of analytical, critical and argumentative writing; explores inference, evidence, inductive and deductive reasoning, identification of assumptions underlying conclusions and other terms of logical thinking; continues expository writing (8000 word minimum).

  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Rental Textbook: Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing by Edgar V. Roberts and Henry E. Jacobs (contact the TC bookstore for rental price at 661-763-7731).
    • Purchase Textbook: Kesey, Ken. One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.
  • Estimated Time per Week: Students can expect to spend between 8-10 hours per week reading and writing required assignments.
  • Special Requirements: Students are expected to work independently.
  • Assignments: Students are required to read the four sections of Literature: An Introduction to Reading and Writing, write reviews of the material and an essay evaluating a piece of literature from each section (i.e., fiction, poetry, drama, literature).
  • Proctored Exams: None
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance will not be an issue. However, each student is expected to turn in assignments on time. It is your responsibility to adhere to the due dates listed in the course syllabus. If you have questions about an assignment, please contact me well in advance. I invite everyone to contact me as often as needed. If you fail to meet the deadlines listed in the syllabus, your grade will be adversely affected. Plagiarized work will receive zero credit and you will be dropped from the course.
