ENGL 1500-43: Composition and Reading

This course focuses on critical thinking and composition through reading of essays, poetry, drama, and fiction. It introduces critical evaluation, develops techniques of analytical, critical and argumentative writing, explores inference, evidence, inductive and deductive reasoning, identification of assumptions, underlying conclusions and other terms of logical thinking, and continues expository writing.

  • Prerequiste: Qualification by assessment process or English 1000 with a grade of "C" or better.

    • Ehrenreich, Barbara. Nickel and Dimed. New York: Henry Holt and Company, 2001.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend between 8 to 10 hours per week reading, writing, and taking quizzes and tests.
  • Special Requirements: The entire course will be conducted online through the Etudes program. Students are required to have Internet access, the ability to use word processing, conduct Internet searches, attach files, send emails, and work independently.
  • Assignments & Tests: Due dates and test dates provided on syllabus.
  • Proctored Exams: No.
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance-learning course, attendance is not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the first assignment deadline, I will assume you do not wish to stay in the class and drop you unless you contact me. It is your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to drop the course. Plagiarized work will receive zero points.
  • New to ETUDES: Be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES.
