COSC 2020-40, Introduction to Computer Information
Systems
Catalog description: This course is designed for students
planning to enter computer science, science, business, education or other
related fields. Learn basic through advanced computer concepts with an
emphasis on both the personal computer and enterprise computing. Topics
include hardware, application and system software, the Internet and World
Wide Web, communications, e-commerce, societal issues, database management,
systems analysis and design, programming, information systems, career
opportunities, certifications in the computer field, and computer trends.

Textbooks & Estimated Costs:
Discovering Computers 2008 Complete by Shelly, Cashman, and Vermaat. Available from the
TC Bookstore
or other online bookstores. ISBN: 1-4239-1205-5. The cost of the textbook is
$116.25.
You will need to purchase the text.
Estimated Time Per Week:
Expect to spend about five hours per
week on this class.
Special Requirements:
Since the entire course will be conducted online, you
will also need access to the Internet.
Assignments & Tests: Your final course grade will be based upon
completion of written assignments, discussion activities, quizzes, and a
final exam.
All quizzes and the final exam are taken online.
Proctored Exams: No
Additional Comments: It’s important that you have your textbook
the first day of class, so please
plan accordingly. If you fall behind in the course, it is very difficult for you to catch
up. If you don’t wish to remain in the class, contact the Counseling
Center or Distance Learning Help Desk to initiate the process of
withdrawing from the class. Failure to do so may result in your receipt
of a failing grade.
