COSC 1532-40 Basic Internet Skills and Concepts

This course provides an introduction to information resources on the Internet. Protocols and services covered include e-mail, news, discussion groups, and the World Wide Web. Navigation, searching, and retrieving techniques will be covered using Windows-based web browsers and search engines. Special focus will be given to the fastest growing resource, the WWW, by creating a personal home page.

  • Class Meets: October 19, 2009 through December 12, 2009.
    This class will be available for access on October 19, 2009.
  • Textbooks & Estimated Costs:
    • Purchase Text: Discovering the Internet Complete Concepts and Techniques, Second Edition by Shelly, Cashman, Napier, and Judd. Available from the TC Bookstore or other online bookstores. The cost of the textbook is $80.25. You will need to purchase the text.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Expect to spend about four hours per week on this class.
  • Special Requirements: Since the entire course will be conducted online, you will also need access to the Internet.
  • Assignments & Tests: Your final course grade will be based upon completion of written assignments, discussion activities, and a final project. Your course grade will be determined by the percentage of the points you earn divided by the total number of points possible.
  • Proctored Exams: No
  • Additional Comments: It’s important that you have your textbook the first day of class, so please plan accordingly. This is a short term class and time will pass VERY quickly. If you fall behind, it is very difficult for you to catch up. If you don’t wish to remain in the class, contact the Counseling Center or Distance Learning Help Desk to initiate the process of withdrawing from the class. Failure to do so may result in your receipt of a failing grade.
  • New to ETUDES: Be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES.
