CJA 2104-40 Legal Aspects of Evidence
This course will cover the origin, development, philosophy and
constitutional basis of evidence in the criminal justice arena.
Constitutional and procedural considerations will be explored as they relate
to arrest, search and seizure, types of evidence and rules governing
admissibility. Judicial decisions interpreting individual rights and case
studies will be discussed in the context of a criminal case.
- Advisory: Eligibility for English 1000 and Reading
1005 strongly recommended. Also good computer and word processing skills
are recommended.

- Class Meets: August 24, 2009 - December 17, 2009
- Textbook & Estimated Costs:
- Rental Textbook: Criminal Evidence by Judy Hails,
5th Edition, Thomson Wadsworth, 2005. Contact the bookstore for
rental cost.
- Estimated Time Per Week:
Students can expect to
spend at least 5 to 8 hours completing the weekly assignments which will
include reading, writing, taking quizzes and participating in class
discussions. The assignments must be completed by the due dates listed
in the on-line class.
- Special Requirements: The entire course will be
conducted on-line through the Etudes program. Students are required to
have Internet access, an active e-mail account, the ability to use word
processing, conduct Internet searches, attach files and work
independently.
- Assignments & Tests:
This course will have
a weekly short quiz and/or writing assignment. There will also be a
midterm and final examination. The final course grade will be computed
as follows: 70% for weekly assignments, 15% for the midterm and 15% for
the final examination. Extra credit points may be awarded for on-line
class discussion participation.

Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is
not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the
first assignment deadline, I will assume you do not wish to stay in the
class and will drop you unless you contact me. After that, it is your
responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact
the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to drop the
course.
