CJA 1521-40 Introduction to Corrections

This is a survey of historical, theoretical and philosophical explanations of criminal behavior provide a treatise on the function and objectives of parole and probation. The judicial system and its relationship to criminal offender as well as modern techniques of controlling crime are studied. The total correctional field with an emphasis on treatment and rehabilitation methods and facilities are surveyed.

  • Advisory: Eligibility for English 1000 and Reading 1005 strongly recommended. Also good computer and word processing skills are recommended.

  • Textbook:
    • STINCHCOM, Jenne B. & Fox Vernon B., Introduction to Corrections, 5th Edition,  Prentice Hall, 1999
  • Class Format: The course will be a distance learning class and will be modified in several different areas. The lecture will be included in the assignment section and provided on a weekly basis and will be the theme for the week’s homework. Reading assignments will be made from the text and additional articles.
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 6 to 10 hours per week reading, writing, and taking quizzes and exams.
  • Assignments & Tests:  There will homework assignments and quizzes, a midterm, a term paper and a final. Each will be have a 25% weight in grading for a total of 100%.Students will complete 1 biography assignment, 1 concept papers, 12 quizzes, a midterm exam, and a final exam. Students will be expected to participate in several asynchronous dialog discussions and write 2 short reviews of those discussions.
  • Proctored Exams: No
  • Attendance Policy: You should complete each module assignment by due dates listed and the final must be submitted by the final due date. All due dates are listed in the class schedule and in the Tasks, Tests and Survey Section. An overview is provided in the class syllabus section. Due dates will be strictly enforced. Students should enter the class on a weekly basis to review for additional information.
