Art 1510-40 Survey of World Art History Prehistoric to 1400.

The architecture, sculpture, and painting of world cultures from the prehistoric era to 1400 are studied in this survey course.

    • Available Student Contact Hours: Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m.
    • The instructor will be available on campus during the week and can arrange to meet with students there.  And, the instructor will check for messages in the Private Message Center several times a day during the week, and at least one time during the weekends.  If you are an auditory learner, you may consider sending the instructor a phone number where she can call you and answer your questions or talk you through something. Phone calls will be taken during office hours or at other times convenient for the student and instructor. The course message center should be used for all on-line correspondence unless you need an immediate answer. In that case, call the instructors office number and send a message through the Message Center.

  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Rental Textbook: Gardner’s ART THROUGH THE AGES, 12th edition, (Thompson & Wadsworth, 2005).  PLEASE NOTE:  We will cover the first 19 Chapters of the text this semester.  The rest of the chapters are covered in the Art 1520 course.  This book is available as a rental from the Taft College Bookstore or for purchase from several online bookstores.   • Estimated Time Per Week: Students can expect to spend approximately 8 to 10 hours per week reading, writing, and taking quizzes and exams.
  • Special Requirements: This course is structured as a on-line course using an Etudes shell to submit work and take exams. Students are welcome to use the computers in the LRC and computer labs to submit their work. Papers are to be word processed and must follow the MLA style.  Students are expected to work independently.
  • PLEASE NOTE: This class is reading intensive, and the ability and willingness to write standard English in electronic communication and in essay answers is necessary. If you are unwilling to rent the required text, or if you do not have time to read the assigned readings, reconsider your enrollment in this class.
  • Assignments & Tests: Students will complete quizzes, midterm and final exams, 5 postings, 1 comparison-contrast research paper following the MLA style. 
  • Proctored Exams: Yes, by the computer. The exams are timed and the computer is set to allow only one entry to the exams.  
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is. If you do not complete the Quiz on the Course Requirements by the due date, you will be dropped.  After that, it is your responsibility to drop the course. The last date to drop the course with a W is November 1. Contact the instructor, counseling center or the distance learning help desk to drop the course.
  • New to ETUDES: Be sure to check System Requirements before getting started with ETUDES. You need to do this on each computer you use while taking a class through ETUDES.
