MATH 0240-30, Pre-algebra (Formerly Math 56)

This course reviews basic skills necessary for beginning algebra and provides an introduction to algebra. Topics include number systems, operations with signed numbers, whole number exponents, order of operations, introduction to the idea of variables, introduction to inequalities, solutions to simple linear equations, and substituting into formulas.

  • Prerequisite: Qualification by assessment process or Math 0230 (formerly Math 57) or one year of high school basic mathematics with a grade of "C" or better.

  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Required Textbook and materials: The textbook package includes: the workbook text: "Prealgebra” by Lial and Hestwood, 3th ed, [Addison Wesley/Pearson, 2006], My Math Lab access kit, the Student Solutions Manual and the Digital Video Tutor [6 CDs]. This package has an ISBN 0-321-36284-5 and is available from the Taft College bookstore Etimated cost is $110. Also, the instructor has recorded a series of lectures via white board presentations with a product called MIMIO. These presentations have been recorded onto a single CD which is available at the Taft College bookstore. Estimated cost: $10
  • Estimated Time Per Week:   Students can expect to spend at least 8 to 12 hours a week reading, studying, doing problems, watching videos and/or MIMIOs and taking proctored tests.
  • Special Requirements:  Be able to work independently, have an internet connection, a valid email address and the ability to use a computer that includes a basic knowledge of word processing and how to download files. Students will submit work via a proctor and the U.S. Postal mail or through the Taft College Learning Resource Center.
  • Assignments & Tests:  Students have at least 2 main sources of instructional content. The instructor-prepared MIMIO Presentations that are designed for use with the corresponding section in the textbook and/or the text authored set of video tapes. The flexible format of the class allows student control of the work schedule within the confines of the deadlines established by the Course Calendar. Click on the syllabus address below for details.
  • Proctored Exams: Exams include proctored Chapter tests and a Final exam. See syllabus for proctor details.  
  • Additional Comments:  Attendance is measured by the student’s participation and progress through the course. Students may be dropped from the class if they are not making "continuing progress" in the class. "Continuing Progress" is defined as taking the chapter tests no later than the last day scheduled.
