CJA 2133-40 Legal Aspects of Corrections

This course provides students with an understanding of the historical legal framework, concepts and precedents that guide corrections' practice. Students will broaden their perspectives of the corrections' environment, the civil rights of prisoners, and the responsibilities and liabilities of corrections staff through course material and readings. This course is an extension of the information contained in Concepts of Criminal Law with emphasis on the corrections environment. The Commission on Correctional Peace Officers Training has identified this course as a core course in the Associate Degree in Correctional Science field.

  • Textbook & Estimated Costs:
    • Rental Textbook: "Correctional Law for the Correctional Officer" by William C. Collins, 4th ed.", ISBN 1-56991-209-2. Contact the bookstore for rental costs.
    • Optional Texts; These books are not necessary but may be of assistance to CDC personnel or those who are interested in CDC issues;
      • California Code Of Regulations, Title 15, "CDC Directors rules" 
      • CDC, Department Operations Manual, "the DOM"
  • Estimated Time Per Week: Your assignments must be completed as listed in your class. The due dates for the tests and essays are critical. You will need Internet access since all of the course will be conducted online. No campus visits are necessary, but if you live near Taft, campus resources are available to you. As with any College Course, you should plan to spend at least 1 hour to 3 hours in study for every 1-unit hour a week on the course.
  • Assignments & Tests:  This class is run on a week-to-week basis requiring a quiz or short essay(s) to be submitted weekly.
  • Proctored Exams: NONE
  • Additional Comments: Because this is a distance learning course, attendance is not an issue. Turning assignments in on time is. If you do not meet the first assignment deadline, I will assume you do not wish to stay in the class and drop you unless you contact me. After that, it is your responsibility to drop the course. Drops will not be backdated. Contact the counseling center or the distance learning help desk to submit drop slips. Note: This is an “advanced” course, there are high expectations for students’ ability to read and understand complex legal issues, and relay that info to the instructor via written essays.  Having completed previous courses in CJA are HIGHLY recommended.
